Norwalk Hospital, in Norwalk, Connecticut, provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art and compassionate cancer care to patients and their loved ones close to home through a multidisciplinary team of leading cancer specialists.

A Norwalk Hospital premier signature clinical service, the cancer program features advanced preventive, diagnostic, treatment and aftercare services, including digital mammography with computer-assisted detection, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and PET (positron emission tomography) scanning, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, clinical trials and cancer support groups.

Although the Hospital’s cancer specialists treat all cancers, they have particular expertise in treating:

  • Blood cancers/disorders
  • Breast cancer
  • Colon and rectal cancer
  • Gastrointestinal cancers
  • Lung and thoracic cancer
  • Prostate cancer

Many of the Hospital’s cancer services are provided through the Whittingham Cancer Center, a comprehensive community cancer center as designated by the American College of Surgeons. The center offers patients top cancer doctors, including leading medical oncologists, and provides chemotherapy, image-guided radiation therapy that precisely targets tumors, advanced clinical trials, complementary medical therapies, genetic counseling and support groups for patients and their loved ones.

The Whittingham Cancer Center is the only community cancer center in Connecticut to offer clinical trials in their earliest phases, allowing patients to take advantage of the newest, promising cancer treatments.

The Center also features a lung health navigator to assist patients undergoing diagnostic tests for an abnormal chest x-ray or other test.

Additional, specialized resources for breast cancer patients are offered through the Smilow Family Breast Health Center, located on the Hospital’s first floor. The center provides extensive educational, screening, diagnostic and support services and features a masters-level breast health specialist nurse who supports and guides patients through screening, diagnosis, treatment and aftercare.

Whittingham Cancer Center medical onocologist and director of clinical research, Richard Frank, MD, writes a blog for cancer patients that appears in WebMD. Read it here.
