Norwalk Hospital provides extensive neurological EEG testing that includes 24-72 hour inpatient and outpatient EEG monitoring, Long-Term EEG Monitoring with video, EMG and nerve conduction studies, Evoked Potential Studies, and formal neuropsychiatric testing. The Norwalk Hospital Epilepsy Center is recognized regionally for its expertise in the management of patients with seizures. The inpatient neurology unit is integrated with and immediately adjacent to the physical rehabilitation unit permitting coordinated care and rapid recovery for the stroke or brain injured patient.
Epilepsy Center
If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the following symptoms, they may have epilepsy:
- brief periods of unresponsiveness
- repeated, unexplained falls and/or injuries
- sudden staring with a change of expression
People with epilepsy have brain that cells create abnormal electricity that causes seizures. A seizure may cause "jerking" movements. In some cases, seizures cause only a loss of consciousness, a period of confusion, a staring spell or muscle spasms.
Norwalk Hospital’s Epilepsy Center, is a specialized facility in Norwalk Hospital just to diagnose and treat epilepsy. With a series of tests using sophisticated diagnostic equipment, as well as a detailed medical family history, we can determine if epilepsy is causing your seizures. If diagnosed with epilepsy, our team of experienced physicians will work on the appropriate medication and/or treatment for you, so you can get back to a healthy, active life.
STROKE CENTER
A TIA, or transient ischemic attack is a brief episode usually lasting a few minutes and no longer than 24 hours. A TIA is sometimes referred to as a “mini-stroke” that be caused by a blood clot temporarily clogging an blood vessel that results in blood loss in that part of the brain not getting sufficient blood supply to the brain. Risk factors for a TIA or stroke (CVA) include high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol in the blood, smoking, lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, and overweight.
WARNING SIGNS OF A TIA OR STROKE
Sudden weakness or numbness in the facial area, arms, fingers, legs or toes, especially on one side of the body. Sudden confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding. Sudden difficulty seeing in one or both eyes. Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, loss or balance and/or coordination. Sudden severity of headaches.
If suspected of having a stroke or (TIA) mini stroke, call 911 immediately. Do not ignore these symptoms, and contact your healthcare professional immediately, even if these symptoms do not go away.
