We were among the first hospitals in our area to offer certified nurse-midwifery services.
Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses (RNs) who have graduated from one of the advanced education programs accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). They must pass a national certification exam and meet strict requirements set by state health agencies. Our certified nurse-midwives all hold postgraduate degrees and are adjunct faculty and clinical instructors to midwifery students at various universities.
Our three certified nurse-midwives provide a variety of services that include:
- Prenatal care
- Pregnancy care
- Childbirth education
- Postpartum care
- Normal newborn care
- Lactation advice
- Gynecologic care
- Family planning
- Nutritional counseling
Our certified nurse-midwives serve as primary care providers during pregnancy. They offer safe, individualized and personal care, working in consultation with obstetricians and other physicians when there are problems that may put a pregnant woman at risk. Though our certified nurse-midwives believe that natural is best and promote individualized care, they are ever mindful of the need for medical intervention when it is necessary.
When it’s time to deliver, our certified nurse-midwives provide care during labor and delivery in Norwalk Hospital’s Childbirth Center. They help women to be self-reliant and to trust their own bodies to deliver healthy babies naturally. Our certified nurse-midwives attend approximately 300 deliveries each year, and they are typically available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
