Trauma, Stroke & Heart Attack Care
As a Level II Trauma Center accredited by the American College of Surgeons, Norwalk Hospital offers expert 24/7 care by trauma specialists, including trauma surgeons and emergency physicians. We are the only hospital in Fairfield County to receive the nationally recognized Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence three times.
- Round-the-clock trauma care for adult and pediatric patients
- Multidisciplinary care from board-certified emergency medicine physicians, general surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, pediatricians, surgical physician assistants, nurses and other experienced clinical staff
- Advanced facilities, including the latest in diagnostic technology. Operating rooms are easily accessible, located nearby.
Trauma patients may be admitted to our 25-bed, acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and the Joint Commission, we offer intensive rehabilitation in a medically supervised setting. Our multidisciplinary rehabilitation team includes physiatrists, nurses, therapists and neuropsychologists. The team’s goal is to help each patient restore maximum function and return to normal life.
Norwalk Hospital is a certified Stroke Center. This means that our highly trained Emergency Department staff follows the optimal care guidelines to save lives and brain function in people thought to be having a stroke. Following a fast but thorough evaluation, appropriate treatment is delivered quickly to minimize long-term consequences.
Research clearly shows a link between rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke with improved outcomes and restoration of function. Our stroke team is available 24/7 to quickly assess patients, make a diagnosis, and begin treatment, including using tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) clot-dissolving medication when appropriate.
We’re proud to be among the first hospitals in the U.S. to have earned primary stroke certification in 2006 from the Joint Commission. This means that the nation’s leading healthcare accrediting and certification organization has validated that we meet national standards of excellence in stroke care. We are also recognized as a primary stroke center by the Connecticut Department of Public Health, having consistently demonstrated the ability to rapidly diagnose and treat stroke.
Our comprehensive and integrated continuum of care begins in our fully equipped Emergency Department and includes radiology, neurology and neurosurgery services; a nationally recognized critical care unit; and outpatient rehabilitation care.
As a primary stroke center, Norwalk Hospital remains on the forefront of rapid and effective stroke care and continues to incorporate the latest, effective treatments.

Norwalk Hospital is certified as a Primary Angioplasty Center. All patients suspected of having a heart attack are evaluated on the spot, either by EMS or the emergency physician. If the diagnosis is confirmed they are taken quickly to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab to receive life-saving care in a way that minimizes the likelihood of long-term consequences.
Our Emergency Angioplasty Program meets and often exceeds national standards for the length of time it takes for interventional cardiologists to restore blood flow to a patient’s heart. We are committed to providing care that follows nationally accepted practice guidelines for heart attack.
