Genetic Counseling & Prenatal Testing

Our Antenatal Diagnostic Center offers genetic counseling services and ultrasound tests. 

Our Norwalk Hospital Antenatal Counseling Center provides personalized and compassionate care, focused on the health and well-being of both you and your unborn baby. Accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), we offer the full range of prenatal testing, diagnostic and genetic counseling services, including:

  • Diagnostic services to test for Down syndrome, trisomy 18 and trisomy 13, as well as other genetic disorders
  • Ultrasound services throughout pregnancy to help manage any medical or obstetrical complication of pregnancy
  • Genetic counseling
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists available to provide consultation regarding any complication of pregnancy
  • Fetal echocardiography services
  • Amniocentesis and CVS

Our genetics counselors, all masters’-level and board-certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling, provide information about hereditary diseases and birth defects, to families, individuals and prospective parents. Genetic counseling includes a comprehensive review of your medical, family and/or pregnancy history and an evaluation of your risk factors. Genetic testing options and the risks and benefits associated with testing are explained in detail.

Registration for Hospital Stay

Expectant mothers who plan to have their babies at Norwalk Hospital are asked to register between the 20th and 24th week of pregnancy by calling Patient Registration at 203-852-2077, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Have your insurance information available as well as insurance pre-certification number, if required.

Support During Your Pregnancy

The Childbirth Center offers varied programs to respond to the educational needs of expectant and new mothers, fathers, grandparents, children and siblings—before, during and after admission to our hospital.  For more information, call 800-399-PATH or 203-459-4687.

  • Tour of the Childbirth Center for Expectant Parents

This tour consists of the Labor and Delivery Room, Postpartum Unit, and Nursery, and is conducted by our nursing staff.

  • Prepared Childbirth Class

This educational series, led by certified childbirth educators, is designed for expectant couples. Content includes Lamaze-style breathing, relaxation techniques, stages of labor and delivery, and a tour of Norwalk Hospital’s Childbirth Center.

Schedule: Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  • Refresher Childbirth Class

Instructed by a certified childbirth educator, this class provides an update and review for expectant couples anticipating the birth of their second or third child. Content includes:

    • Lamaze-style breathing
    • Relaxation techniques
    • Stages of labor and delivery
    • Newborn care
    • A tour of Norwalk Hospital’s Childbirth Center

This class also provides information for parents seeking to have a vaginal birth after a cesarean section.

Schedule: Offered on a weeknight, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Meet in the Main

  • Breastfeeding Class

This 2-hour class, taught by a RN certified lactation consultant, is offered to all expectant mothers, fathers and grandparents and includes:

    • Normal process of breastfeeding
    • Parental adjustment
    • Normal newborn cues and reactions
